On 6 November 2026, Elon Musk said Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to free capacity for Cybercab. For Australian readers, that announcement comes two weeks after Tesla cancelled local Cybertruck reservations. The sequence sits beside an earlier Australian story — the 2023 Palladium Model S and Model X right-hand-drive cancellations — with an important difference in timing between the local market exits and later global production decisions.
What Musk said
In a post on X on 6 November 2026 (about 5:30 pm AEDT), Musk wrote:
Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production
(X post)
The post names the Cybertruck, the Gigafactory Texas plant, and a timing of around the middle of next year. From November 2026, that points to around mid-2027. The stated reason is capacity for Cybercab, Tesla’s purpose-built autonomous vehicle. Tesla’s Q2 2026 Update already reported that Cybercab production had begun at Gigafactory Texas.
The post does not announce a new factory for Cybertruck, a named final edition, or a change to aftersales support for existing trucks. Tesla has not, in that post or in materials reviewed for this article, announced a right-hand-drive Cybertruck program or a replacement production location outside Texas.
Australia’s Cybertruck reservations — cancelled 23 October 2026
About two weeks earlier, Tesla told Australian and New Zealand Cybertruck reservation holders that plans to produce the truck for those markets had been discontinued. Reservations would be cancelled with a full refund of payments made. As a goodwill offer, holders who ordered a new Model 3 or Model Y were offered a complimentary one-year Full Self-Driving (Supervised) subscription — at the then-published A$149 a month, about A$1,788 of software value. (CarExpert, 23 Oct 2026, quoting the customer email.)
Local context:
- Australian deposits were A$150, taken from November 2019, shortly after the Cybertruck reveal.
- Tesla’s Australian reservation page closed in May 2022 and did not reopen; deposits remained outstanding until the October 2026 emails.
- Tesla never offered a production right-hand-drive Cybertruck. No official Australian Cybertruck deliveries followed those reservations.
For Australia, the market exit came in October. Musk’s November post is a separate factory decision: Cybertruck build at Gigafactory Texas is planned to wind down around mid-2027 for Cybercab volume.
Palladium Model S and Model X in Australia — May 2023
Australian buyers who reserved the refreshed (“Palladium”) Model S and Model X faced a related outcome. Orders opened in early 2021 after the US refresh. Local pricing and delivery timing were later pulled. Tesla stopped taking those orders in April 2023. On 12 May 2023, customers were told that, due to vehicle-program changes, Model S and Model X would not be available in right-hand drive, so their orders could not be fulfilled and would be cancelled, with a full refund of payments made. Tesla also offered an A$3,000 credit toward a new Model 3 or Model Y if ordered by 31 October 2023. (Drive report of the customer notice)

Those May 2023 notices cancelled Australian (and other right-hand-drive market) orders. They did not end Model S and Model X production worldwide. Left-hand-drive Model S and Model X continued to be built and sold afterward.
Tesla later closed the programs globally:
- On the Q4 2025 earnings call (28 January 2026), Musk said it was time to bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an “honorable discharge,” and that anyone interested should order while they still could, with Fremont space intended for Optimus robot production. (CNBC report of the call)
- On 1 April 2026, Musk posted that custom orders of Model S and X had come to an end, with only inventory remaining. (X post)
- Tesla’s Q2 2026 Update states that the company had decommissioned the Model S and Model X manufacturing lines at the Fremont Factory and was installing first-generation Optimus lines.
From Australia’s May 2023 right-hand-drive cancellations to the Q2 2026 confirmation that the Fremont S and X lines had been decommissioned is about three years. The Australian cancellations were a market decision; the later Fremont decommissioning was a global production decision.
What the cancellations have in common
In both cases, Australian customers reserved a flagship Tesla that Tesla did not deliver in right-hand drive, while left-hand-drive production continued for a time in other markets. The Cybertruck calendar is tighter: the Australian reservation cancellation and the Texas wind-down announcement sit close together, with production still planned to continue into mid-2027.
October’s emails concerned not selling Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand. November’s post concerns reallocating Texas capacity toward Cybercab. Existing Cybertruck owners are a different group from reservation holders who never received a vehicle; Musk’s post does not address residual North American order books or aftersales support.
For Australian buyers, Tesla has already discontinued Cybertruck plans for this market, and it has not announced a right-hand-drive Cybertruck or a replacement plant to continue the model after the Texas wind-down. Model 3 and Model Y remain the right-hand-drive Teslas the company builds for Australia.
